Do You Suffer From Obsessive-Compulsive Comment Disorder?

February 21st 2008 13:28

Bloggers Love to Express Their Thoughts!

Occasional comment compulsion is a common occurrence among thoughtful readers and bloggers, who do, after all, tend to become a bit more involved in the content they read than the average person does—and who tend to have a little more to say about the topics written about by other bloggers than the average reader does, as well. Such bloggers also (quite understandably) have a greater stake in the comments left on their own blogs than other people do. All of the above might be expected to create somewhat of a tendency for a blogger to get a little carried away with comments every now and then.

But OCCD is slightly different, a little more regular—or rather, incessant—than the type mentioned above. OCCD is a malady that can strike a blogger at any time—particularly when his or her mind is otherwise occupied—which can get in the way of rational thought.

OCCD Signs and Symptoms: How Many Do You Exhibit?

What are the symptoms of OCCD? Read on and see how many of them describe you.

Are you so into commenting that you

•Reply to a five-line comment with a five-paragraph response?

•Reply to a five-word comment with a five-paragraph response?

•Post blog posts in your comments box?

•Post blog posts in other bloggers’ comments boxes?

•Feel you have to comment on every single post a fellow blogger writes?

•Forget that the smiley face icon often means “not to be taken seriously” and go on and on with a serious response?

•Neglect writing posts on your blog because you’re too busy with marathon commenting?

If any of these scenarios describe you, it may be time to take a break!

Happy non-compulsive commenting!
Jeanne

P.S. I have to admit that, though the numbers may not be perfectly accurate, at one time or another, I've been guilty of every one of the above! How about you?

Did you enjoy this post? Have any other telltale signs of an obsessive commenter to add to those above? We'd love to hear them--really!

Not guilty, Jeanne. I tend to be brief, and sometimes I read without commenting (though I always mean to do better). OCCD bloggers ARE interesting to follow around, though.

Good for you, Sharon!

We OCCD types certainly can get carried away at times! LOL! But this one isn't planning to do that today. This comment will be short and sweet!

See, I knew I could do it!

Thanks for the visit!

Hi, Cindy!

Thanks for thinking of me! I'm so swamped with work right now that I'm not sure when I'll ever get around to it, though. It's all I can do to keep up! (Also have a few other memes I've been tagged for that are still sitting around gathering dust. LOL!)

Appreciate the thought! I'll have to see what I can do.

I don't think I have OCCD though I'm not sure. I mean I can often run on when I talk, and when commenting on others blogs, and often tell them what I think of their post though I feel it's important to share one's feelings emotional or otherwise, and I don't think I've ever had OCCD symptoms though my fingers cramp to the point the bones feel like a crushed can beneath a Chevy and quite often I forget what I'm saying, but I think it's just because my fingers get cold and at 34 I'm losing my mind. And I most definitely DO NOT EVER put an entire post in anyone's comments, though if you'd like to check me out you can here. I mean I think it would be rude to post an entire post in someone's comments, or even a link to yourself just so people could know you better.

Dang!!! Mmmm maybe I do have a real problem.

Is there self help groups?

Will I get spots if I continue down this darkened path?

Will my throat swell?

Wait, what am I worried about? I don't have OCCD, I'm being paranoid. I do that. I worry a lot over nothing.

Naw, I think I'm going to be just fine, as long as I keep posting comments like this everyone will love me.

Great post Jeanne!

Love your post...er, comment, JP! Very entertaining! I love long comments, myself. They show thought and interest. I just have to stop and think, every now and then, of how much time I can spend writing them if I'm not careful, when there's so much else to do. But comments are so much fun to write that they really can be addicting. They're so much less work than writing real posts or doing other real-world, make-a-living type writing assignments.

Never thought about compulsive linking as being a sign of OCCD, but now that you mention it, it could just be. Thanks for adding to my symptoms list!

Thanks, too, for linking to your very touching story which was recently published in "Chicken Soup for the Soul: Love Stories." I just loved reading it, and I’m sure that any of my readers who haven’t read it yet will love it just as much and be just as touched by it as I was! Congratulations on this wonderful writing milestone!

Glad you dropped by!

Darn it, I am so guilty of this. I try to be careful to put long comments onto my own blog with trackbacks. Just this morning I wrote a post length comment on my own blog, though!

Not me, not me!

(NOW, what did I do with the five paragraphs I was going to paste into this comment box?)

Mark,

Don't feel too bad. I really think that bloggers love to see long comments on their blogs! It's a compliment. It means the reader has read and thought about what they've written and felt it worthy of a thoughtful, in-depth response.

Despite what I've written in this post--half in fun--I'll probably not totally stop leaving long and thoughtful comments on the blogs I visit (at least whenever I have the time to leave them). In-depth commenting really does add value to our fellow bloggers' posts and conversations, helping us to make a real connection. While many of their readers won't bother to read long comments, you can bet that every blogger will read every word posted to his or her blog--and appreciate it!

Thanks so much for the visit!

Hi, Laura!

He he, that's very cute! But, I say, "Bring it on!" I'd love to have you post your five paragraphs in my comments box! After all, despite what I've said above, that's what the comments box is for!

Thanks for stopping by and making me smile!
Jeanne
